Getting A Dental Bridge

November 15, 2017

If we are all completely honest with ourselves, no one likes the idea of getting old. It is something that happens to other people, that is what we hope, and age will just sort of accidentally pass us by, leaving other people to experience wrinkles, and grey hair, and a sudden desire to drink prune juice. Sadly there is absolutely no way to avoid getting older indefinitely, and even if you spend a lot of time looking after yourself and trying to make sure that you do not do your body any harm, there is no way to prevent absolutely everything. You will eventually get to a point where a dentist, doctor, or someone else will explain to you that there is something wrong, and you need to do something to fix it.

One of the most common experiences of this nature is having problems with your teeth. As we get older, the enamel that coats our teeth to protect them from bacteria and decay gets weaker and softer. It is not able to defend your teeth from all the horrible stuff that starts attacking it, and so you start to have holes in your teeth in which bacteria can live. If you are not brushing and flossing properly – and let’s be clear, most of us are not doing this – then without us noticing, our teeth start to become damaged. If we do not visit a dentist regularly, such as every year, then the bacteria has longer and longer to do its damage, and that means that eventually you get yourself into the situation that you have to say goodbye to a tooth.

No dentist likes giving this sort of bad news, and it becomes more and more likely as we get older as it takes less for our teeth to become really damaged. The trouble is that it can be very demoralizing for someone who has really tried to take care of their teeth to have a gap there. It seems to tell the world that you did not really look after your teeth very well, and often that is the opposite of what happened. When you get to the point where two or even three teeth are missing, then your dentist will start to talk to you about the possibility of getting a dental bridge. This is a type of dental treatment that many people are unaware of, but thankfully getting a dental bridge is becoming more and more common because it solves that awkward feeling when you smile because you will no longer have any gaps in your teeth.

At its simplest level, getting a dental bridge means having a false tooth put in the space where you did one have a tooth, which is then attached to the healthy teeth around it as an anchor – which is where the bridge analogy comes in. When you are getting a dental bridge your dentist will look for the healthiest teeth that are around the gaps, and use them to stabilize the new porcelain tooth that will be designed to match the rest of your teeth perfectly. Once you have the dental bridge in place, many people will not even be able to realize which is the false tooth and which are your real teeth! It really is that impressive.

At the end of the day, getting a dental bridge is a way to put off the signs of aging for another few years. No one will know that you have lost a few teeth, and you will be able to smile and eat just like normal.
